TYPE STYLES

CONCORDANT STYLE occurs when you use only one typeface. You can use bold and Italic variation but the same typeface throughout the design. This keeps the page harmonious, quiet and formal.

CONTRASTING STYLE occurs when you combine separate typefaces that are clearly distinct from each other. This creates an Appealing and Exciting design that attracts Attention!

CONFLICTING STYLE occurs when you combine typefaces that are similar in style, size and weight. The similarities are disturbing because the visual effect is niether concordant or contrasting.

TYPE CATEGORIES

Oldstyle typefaces are based on the hand lettering done by scribes before the invention of the printing press. "Serifs" are the thin line strokes on the ends of the letter. Palatino and Times are examples of Oldstyle type.

Modern typefaces have horizontal instead of slanted serifs. There is a radical difference in thick and thin lines. Bodoni and Times New Roman are examples of Modern type and have a cold elegant look.

Slab Seriftypefaces have serifs but little or no thick and thin line difference. New Century and Schoolbook are examples of Slab Serif types which are easy to read.

Sans Seriftypefaces are those without the thin serif strokes on the ends of the letter. ("Sans" means "without") Sans Serif letterforms are all the same thickness. Avant Garde and Helvetica are Sans Serif types that are used in titles and headlines.

Script typefaces appear to hve been handlettered with a "Calligraphy" pen. Script typefaces should never be used as a long block of text or as all capitals. Old English and Zap Chancery are examples of Script typefaces that can be stunning when they are very large in size.

Decorative typefaces are fun, distinctive and easy to use letterforms made from objects or artistic desighsfor any whim or emotion you wish to express.

TYPE C0NTRASTS

Any typeface can be altered to fit your graphic design by simply contrasting the letterform Sizes(difference between large and small-remember don't be a wimp when comes to size contrast), Visual Weight (line thicknesses), Structure (Serifs and Sans Serifs, script and decorative), Direction (Vertical and diagonal vs. always horizontal words), and of course Colors (primary, secondary, warm, cool, or analogus)
