MAGAZINE COVER

OBJECTIVE:

Student will create a realistic magazine cover using:

CONTENT:

The magazine cover will contain the following:

  • The magazine cover design will be an actual PUBLISHED periodical and be appropriate for the classroom
  • Students will identify themselves on the magazine cover by first and last name and tell why they are featured on the cover of the magazine in a teaser
  • Student will write a minimum of four magazine story teasers using a complete sentence for each teaser

STEP 1. Magazine Cover Dummy

Select a magazine title and individual photo of yourself and draw a "Dummy" or blue-print plan on an 8.5 X 11 inch plain white paper. Refer to the linked handout references above for selecting your layout format, type style, and color application. Use colored pencils or markers to color in your magazine dummy. Turn in your magazine dummy to Mr. Parr for approval and present your approved magazine dummy to check out equipment to create your magazine cover.

STEP 2. Import Image

If you have a photo print you want to use for your cover without a negative:

  • Use the flatbed scanner to capture your image and import it to a computer.

If you have a black & white or color negative you want to use for your cover:

  • Use the Nikon LS-2000 Scanner connected to the "Oscar" G-3 computer.

If you don't have an image of yourself you can use for your cover:

  • Use the Canon D-30 Digital camera and the studio area to shot an image. Down-load the image to either the "Emmy" or "Toni" iMac computers.

STEP 3. Photoshop Design

Using the Adobe Photoshop software create and print your magazine cover:

  • Go to the Apple Menu and open Adobe Photoshop. Under the File Menu click on "New." Create an 8.5 X 11 inch canvas at 260 dpi resolution. Fill the canvas with background color.
  • Open your individual image. Make any adjustments: Levels, Size, Erasing, etc. Select (Apple key-A) Copy (Apple key-C) and Paste (Apple key-V) your image onto the magazine cover background.
  • Select the "T" in the toolbox and type in your titles and teasers. To move the text, select the arrow in the top right box of the toolbox.
  • Go to "File- Print." Be sure that you are in Portrait Format, and that 1,440 "quality", Color Printing and Photo Quality Glossy Paper are selected. Insert Glossy Photo paper in printer and press "Print." Get an 8X10 photo sleeve and label your project with your first and last name and "Magazine Cover." Turn the project into Mr. Parr for evaluation.
