Presentation requirements

Students will receive a handout which lists different American Authors. They will choose an author to study early in the fall. During 1st quarter, the students will read a novel by their author and research background information for their author. Students will write a 2-3 page literary analysis of their novel. The literary analysis is to be turned in to Mrs. Parr (date to be determined). A working draft of the background information on their author must be turned in to Mrs. Parr by November 3.

2nd quarter students will read other selections by their author, short stories, poems, essays, chapters from novels, plays, etc. The goal is for students to learn as much about their author as possible. A written report is due (TBD). Presentations will be given in class the week of (TBD), (before semester tests).
The written report should contain the following:

Paper requirements:

  1. Title page (1 page)
  2. Background information on the author (1-2 pages) Start with a paragraph or two that introduces the entire project and then move into background information for the author!
  3. List of works by the author (1 page)
  4. Literary analysis of the novel read (2-3 pages) Not a summary!
  5. Discussion of other work written by the author (1-2 pages)
  6. Student opinion of the author (1 page) Why is this author considered a "classic American author? What is it about the author's writing that has earned him or her awards? If they have not won awards, do you feel the author should receive awards? Why?
  7. Bibliography of at least 5 sources (1 page)

Note: use MLA format. Information that is not common knowledge must be cited using parenthetical citations. For example, following quoted material or information paraphrased from a source, the student should put the author's last name, and the page number the information was taken from (Poe 42). These citations must link to the bibliography! Plagiarizing will result in a zero grade for the assignment.

Presentation requirements
Students will prepare and give a presentation based on what they learned about their author. Students have several options as to how they present the information. They will choose one of the following:

  • Information can be presented in a speech. 5 -15 minutes. Students will be expected to bring in visual aids and must select two passages from the book to share with students.
  • A video presentation. 5 - 15 minutes.
  • A computer software presentation 5 - 15 minutes using PowerPoint, hyper studio, or a similar type program.
  • A web page project.

Reminder: All presentations should include two excerpts for the author's writing. Pick these carefully. They should reveal important information about the novel or the author's style of writing. They should not be fillers.

Presentations will be given to the class. If students are not ready to present on the day they are assigned they will receive a zero.
