20 Shot Contact Sheet

After developing your film and cutting the negatives into strips of five, place them in a plastic negative sleeve. In the Darkroom you will make a contact sheet so that you will have small "positive" images to view and select your best shots to enlarge.

To make a contact sheet:

first cut a test strip from your print paper that is a little wider than on strip of negatives. (1.5 inches by 8 inches) Set the enlarger aperture at F-8. Be sure to move the enlarger up high enough to show light on your whole negative sleeve. Place the strip of paper under one row of five negatives. (select a row that has the best overall film exposure - not too dark and not too light) Set the enlarger timer for 20 seconds. Place the glass plate on top of the negative sleeve so that the negatives lay flat on the test strip. Using the cardboard from your print paper packet, cover all but the first negative on top of the test strip. Turn on the enlarger light using the enlarger timer switch. Move the cardboard to expose the next negative at 15 seconds in the timer countdown. Move the cardboard to expose the next negative at 10 seconds. At 5 seconds take the cardboard away from all the negatives.

When the enlarger timer turns off the enlarger light, remove the glass plate and place the test strip in the developer tray for 1 minute. (Use the digital clock on the shelf above the print washer to keep track of time) Using the tongs, drop the test strip in the stop bath tray for 30 seconds. Use the stop bath tongs to remove the test strip and drop it in the fix tray for 2 minutes. Use the Fix tongs (using the wrong tongs contaminates the tray and weakens the chemicals) to remove the test strip and place it in the print washer. Go around to the other side of the print washer (through the revolving door) and remove the test strip from the print washer and place it on the squeegee hood. Squeegee the test strip off and look for the exposure time between 20 and 5 seconds that has dark blacks and the white of the paper in the test strip print. If 20 seconds is too dark and 15 seconds is too light, use a exposure time of 17 or 18 seconds. If the entire test strip is too dark, reset the enlarger aperture for less light at F-11 and make a new test strip. If the test strip has no black contrast, reset the enlarger aperture for more light at F-5.6.

One you have selected the correct enlarger aperture and exposure time, place a piece of print paper that is the same size as your negative sleeve under your negatives and place the glass plate on top. Set the enlarger timer for the correct amount of time and push the exposure button on the timer. When the timer turns off the enlarger light, place the contact sheet in the developer tray for 1 minute. Using the tongs, drop the contact sheet in the stop bath tray for 30 seconds. Use the stop bath tongs to remove the contact sheet and drop it in the fix tray for 8 minutes. Use the Fix tongs (using the wrong tongs contaminates the tray and weakens the chemicals) to remove the test strip and place it in the print washer for 10 minutes. Squeegee the contact sheet off and place it in the print dryer until the paper curls. (The print will uncurl when it cools off.) Place your contact sheet in an 8 X 10 photo sleeve, label it with your first and last name and the words "Contact Sheet" and turn it into Mr. Parr.
