Beginning Photography is a course in Audio/Visual Media.There are two goals for beginning photography students. The first goal has three parts:
The second goal of the beginning photography course is for students to explore the related Audio/Visual Media career opportunities in the fields of Photo Journalism, Commercial Digital Photography, Computer Graphics, Fine Art Photography and Video Production. Students learn to effectively compose their photos using the rule of thirds, horizon lines, balance, grouping, leading lines, framing, selective focus, and lighting techniques. Photo Journalism assignments include; candid shots, group shots and action shots. Students learn to import photo and video images using negative scanners and computer video capture programs. Portraits, still life's, and abstract close-ups are Commercial Digital Photography assignments. Graphic design concepts of image and color psychology, layout formatting and typography are introduced in Computer Graphics. Assignments utilize special camera effects and dark room and computer software techniques. Students apply these concepts in a magazine cover design and a CD jacket design. Video Production is a career exploration area in which students learn the safe and correct operation of video camcorders and video editing equipment. Students create story boards which list the camera angles, types of shot framing and the approximate time length of each shot. Students also write the text for the narration and titles needed for each story. Video production assignments include a one minute News Interview story, a 30 second commercial or Public Service Announcement, a five minute how-to video, and a five minute feature video. Video assignments may be completed by groups of up to four people who are in the class. Each student will complete a semester ending Final Project. The final project will present one or more examples from each of the Audio/Visual Media Career areas. The final project will include a narrative on how the student will utilize the skills they have accquired from the class in their future.There are three presentation options. A three minute Videotape Presentation is the first option. The second option is a three minute Power Point or Flash computer presentation. The third option is a Tri-fold Portfolio Presentation. The tri-fold portfolio is a resume type project which will include a brief student biography, a work and volunteer experience history and six student selected examples of the best work they created in class. Successful completion of the Beginning Photography course with an A or B grade qualifies the student to apply for a position as an advanced photographer or as a staff member of KBHS News, the daily announcement and special events video production program at Bethel High School. |
