from Camp Muir Route
This is the most famous and visible advanced route at Mt. Rainier. Hundreds of skiers take this tour every year. One reason is because it is such a long and evenly sloped run and it has fantastic views. The entire tour is eight miles round trip, but a shorter trip is always an option. The elevation gain and loss is 4600 feet. It takes endurance and determination to complete the tour in the winter with fewer daylight hours. Visibility is essential for this tour which has claimed the lives of a few who were unprepared or unwilling to turn back when weather deteriorated. This tour follows the same route as the historic Silver Skis downhill race of the 1930's.
