November 7, 2006
Dear EMS Parent/Guardian:
It is hard to believe that we are already into November, we have had a great start to the school year and have some important information to share with you for conferences and upcoming activities. The first thing I would like to give you information on is our conference schedule. In an effort to accommodate new requirements for 4th through 9th graders related to the WASL, we have had to adjust our conference schedule. To meet this requirement we will are inviting 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to bring their parents to conferences at a designated time so they may review and share their individual results with them and their teachers. These conferences will require 3-5 minutes for them with their math, reading and writing teachers creating a need for more time in our conference schedule. As a result please note the following dates on the district calendar related to conferences:
Friday, November 17 is a half day- dismissal @ 11:40
Monday, November 20 is a half day- dismissal @ 11:40
Conferences 12:15-3:15 and 5:00-8:00
Tuesday, November 21 is a half day- dismissal @ 11:40
Conferences 12:15-3:15 and 5:00-8:00
Wednesday, November 22 is a non-school day
Conferences remain arena style to accommodate families who have students in multiple grades. Also below you will find a schedule of times we are asking families to attend conferences to minimize long lines. If this time does not work for your family, we understand you will attend at the time most convenient for you.

Parent Access:
An exciting new option to access student information is now available at EMS! This program is an outgrowth of our desire to increase our school to home communication, and we hope correspondingly greater student achievement.
The new computer system that we use in this district has many different modules, one of which is “Family Access.”
What this module allows is remote access for parents, via computer, to a variety of information regarding their student(s). Attendance, lunch accounts, grades and even eventually our teachers’ gradebooks will be available for viewing from the comfort of your computer.
If you’d like to gain access to this system, please e-mail Debbie Carlman at the middle school at d_carlman@eatonville.wednet.edu , she will then e-mail you your password, and access directions.
Nurses Corner:
Head Lice Can Happen to Anyone!
Recently the Middle School has experienced a handful of cases of head lice. Following is an informational letter from the district nurse to give you some facts about what to look for, how to avoid head lice and how to deal with it if your child is exposed.
Head lice are transmitted by contact with an infested person or by contact with combs, brushes hats, coats or any other object infested with lice. Human lice are not carried or transmitted by animals. Lice deposit their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft, these eggs hatch in 7-10 days. The nits are tiny white to dark brown, oval shaped eggs, glued to the hair shaft. They look somewhat similar to dandruff, but do not brush away like dandruff.
To remove nits and lice you should do the following:
-Apply a pediculicide (such as RID), and/or a non-toxic product (such as Lice-out Gel) according to the label directions.
-Remove all nits and bugs. (A Licemeister or similar comb and warm vinegar rinse may help loosen nits)
-Repeat treatment in 10 days, (if using a pediculicide) to kill newly hatched lice
-Pet shampoo is not a recommended treatment
-The Licemeister comb and Lice-out gel are an effective non-toxic treatment that can be used daily
Vacuum rugs and furniture and car. Wash, dry-clean or steam press the personal clothing and bedding of any infested person. Materials that cannot stand high wash temperature (130 degrees), e.g., pillows or stuffed toys, may be placed in the dryer or placed in a tightly closed plastic bag for two weeks. Thoroughly wash all personal article such as combs and brushes in hot water (130 degrees) for at least twenty minutes. Treat mattresses or place in a zipped plastic cover. A commercial spray such as "R&C" may also be used to treat furniture etc. Your child should be reexamined every day to be sure lice have been completely removed and/or re infestation has not occurred. Children should be reminded not to use each other’s personal items. If your child is found to have lice and/or nits while at school, you will be notified and asked to pick up the child. Students are not allowed to ride the bus until determined to be nit free. Please accompany your student to school upon returning so that we can check to be sure your student is no longer infested. School District policy does not allow any student with nits or lice to remain at school.
Rewards Assemblies:
At EMS we like to reward our students for their good behavior.
On Nov. 9th we will have our first Rewards Assembly of the year.
Your student will participate in fun activities, win prizes, and be entered into a drawing for gift certificates and cool prizes.
The students look forward to these assemblies each quarter, but without the support of the parents we cannot fund this program. Take a moment to think about what you may be able to contribute. Do you own a business that may be able to donate money, services, or products? Do you work for a company that may be able to donate money, services, or products? Nothing is too small and every donation is greatly appreciated.
Too often we only recognize the negative behavior of our kids. This program lets them know that we do notice when they are being good.
Please contact Ronda Litzenberger by e-mail at Rowronda@aol.com or
(360)832-2200. We would be happy to speak with a company representative about any donations.
