Windows desktop

On your own piece of notebook paper, write down the following vocabulary.

  1. Desktop: it is the background on which icons and other items are shown.
  2. Icon: the little symbols that represent programs. For example, the little e with the circle around it represents Internet Explorer.
  3. Taskbar: it is the rectangular strip at the bottom. You will start and control most programs from here.
  4. Start button: located at the far left of the taskbar, it is where you start programs or shut down the computer.
  5.  System tray: located at the far right of the taskbar, it is where you control things like the volume of the speakers.
  6. Quick launch bar: located to the right of the start button, this is where frequently used programs can be started.
  7. Minimized program bar: located in the middle of the task bar, it shows the programs that have been minimized.
  8. Monitor: TV that shows the desktop.

Time to draw.

Now turn your paper over and draw a rectangle that takes up the whole page. Draw and label all the words that you just wrote down. Here is a picture of what is should look like. Use arrows to help in labeling your diagram. (You do not have to recreate the pattern or picture of the desktop).
