Foreword

The staffs at Columbia Crest Elementary School, Eatonville Elementary School and Weyerhaeuser Elementary School are dedicated to providing an environment in which your child will find success. To help them find success and develop a love for learning, parental support and student effort are needed. We will work together to create and maintain a safe, positive atmosphere where students can achieve to the best of their ability.

Elementary students will:

Strive for academic success

Treat everyone with kindness and respect

Respect and take care of the school environment

Follow the rules of the school

The ABC Guide to Success….

Attendance

  1. Students need to attend school everyday in accordance with the Compulsory Education Act passed in the State of Washington on July 2, 1992. Exceptions are illnesses, a religious observance, or a family emergency.
  2. Parents are asked to call the school office in the morning if their child is to be absent that day. As a courtesy the office will call home if no call is received by 9:00 a.m.
  3. Students are asked to bring a note signed by a parent when returning from an absence or tardy.
  4. Students must sign in when arriving late.
  5. Parents must sign their students out in the office when picking their child up early from school.
  6. Assignments missed during absences must be made up.

Unexcused Absences

If a child is absent from school without parental permission, or leaves school grounds without permission from the office, parent(s) will be contacted and the student will receive disciplinary consequences. Students having two or more unexcused absences may be referred to the Juvenile Justice System (Becca Law).

Homework

Each classroom teacher will provide parents with a copy of their homework policy. Individual teacher policies will be enforced. In addition, students will be required to read 20 minutes, 20 days per month. This will be recorded on a monthly calendar to be turned in at the end of each month.

Discipline

Each classroom teacher will provide parents with a copy of their classroom discipline plan. This plan could include a referral to the office as a final step. Office referrals may result in additional consequences.

This year, we will continue to use a program called Kelso’s Choice. This curriculum teaches students to differentiate between big problems and small problems. Big problems will result in a discipline referral to the office. All other encounters are considered small problems. Students will be taught nine ways to solve small problems. Look for more information from your classroom teacher.

School wide discipline (the following are part of our school board policy and are considered BIG problems).

  1. Use or possession of alcohol, tobacco, chewing tobacco, illegal drugs or paraphernalia, or any substances that appear to be a drug, will result in suspension from school. See Exceptional misconduct policy.
  2. Fighting, physical intimidation, verbal or sexual harassment, will not be tolerated as part of our school environment.
  3. Students will comply with reasonable adult requests.
  4. Continuous and willful refusal to accomplish school tasks or directions and violations of school regulations may result in loss of recess, in-school suspension, suspension or expulsion. Length of suspension will be determined by school authorities and will reflect the offense committed. Parents and/or guardians will be notified in writing of consequences involving suspensions. During and out of school suspension, parents have complete custody and jurisdiction of their child. Any student placed on short or long term suspension will have the right to make application for re-admission at anytime pursuant to WAC 180-40-240.
  5. A suspended student may not loiter or appear on school property or at any school sponsored activity at or away from school.
  6. Students will be expected to make up all missed assignments or grades will be affected, and privileges taken away (field trips, recesses, assemblies, special activities).

Discipline—Steps for Conflict Resolution

Children will report big problems to an adult immediately.

Students will be taught nine problem solving strategies in order to resolve small problems. They are:

  1. Go to another game
  2. Share and take turns
  3. Wait and cool off
  4. Make a deal
  5. Walk away
  6. Talk it out
  7. Apologize
  8. Tell them to stop
  9. Ignore

Medication at School

State law permits the giving of oral medication to students during school hours provided proper authorization from physicians and parents is obtained. The form needed for this is available in our school office and all offices of Pierce County Health providers.

This also includes over the counter medications such as cough drops or Tylenol.

Information regarding required immunizations prior to school attendance is available in the office.

Parent Communication

Parents can expect a weekly envelope to come home on Mondays. This envelope will contain all newsletters from the office, PTA, etc. Unless teachers inform you of a change, classroom correspondence will also be done via Monday envelopes. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher with questions at any time. They are happy to work with you.

Support for the learning Environment

The school cannot be responsible for your lost or stolen items. Toys and other distractions negatively affect the learning process and are a temptation to other students. You should not bring to school any items of value such as toys, radios, cassette or CD players, electronic games and equipment, expensive clothing and sports cars. All cell phones should be turned off and stored in backpacks during the school day. We recommend that all belongings brought from home be labeled. Put your name on all clothing items including coats.

Volunteers and Visitors

  1. Adult volunteers are welcome! But, for the safety of our students, all volunteers must be fingerprinted and receive training prior to working in the school or chaperoning field trips. Volunteers must sign in at the office and wear a badge that is provided for identification purposes. This includes adults who volunteer on a daily basis.
  2. Student visitors are not allowed.

A message from the Principal….

Welcome to Eatonville Elementary! It is with great excitement and energy that I greet you as a partner in your child’s educational experience. I look forward to meeting each of you over the course of the year.

Eatonville Elementary has a highly dedicated K-5 staff who work hard to provide the best education possible. We welcome you to be a part of this process by being in communication with your child’s teacher and supporting students at home by assisting with homework. Also, you are always invited to volunteer in the building or your child’s classroom.

An open, positive, two-way communication is essential in a good partnership. Please contact teachers or administration with comments or questions you my have. The staff and I are thrilled about the wonderful opportunities that are waiting! I encourage you to join the excitement!
