Mount Tahoma Trail System:

Succeeding Through Volunteer Support

Excellent Skiing Opportunities

The Mount Tahoma Trail System offers about 100 miles of excellent cross country skiing on snow-covered logging roads. The system is truly "user operated." It is managed and maintained by the Mount Tahoma Trails Association (MTTA) through donations and volunteers. It operates under a cooperative agreement between the Department of Natural Resources, US Forest Service, Champion International and Mount Rainier National Park.

One of the many activities of MTTA volunteers is grooming between 15 and 30 miles of trail using snowmobiles and snowcats. Their efforts help maintain outstanding skiing opportunities for all skill levels, from beginner to back country wilderness explorer.

Where To Find The Trails

The Central and South Districts of the system are located just north and south of the Nisqually River near Ashford. Trails in these districts are well marked and signed. There are three ski huts in the area, which are accessed by groomed trails.

The North District trail system, accessible through Champion's Kapowsin Gate, provides the easiest route to the west edge of Mount Rainier National Park and the Golden Lakes area. The North District can be enjoyed by skiers of all abilities. It offers a wilderness ski experience and easy access to back country trails in the park. A yurt is available in the North District, and can be reached from a groomed trail.
