VIDEO PRODUCTION COURSE OUTLINE

PURPOSE: This course exposes students to several Broadcast Television career opportunities in the areas of Studio Production, News Production and Sports Production. Career paths include: Technical Director, Audio Operator, Video Tape Operator, Studio Camera Operator, Electronic Field Production Camera Operator, Sports Camera Operator, News Photographer, News Reporter, Graphics Operator, Floor Director, and Tele prompt Operator.

METHODOLOGY: The curriculum for this course is competency based with skills and associated tasks mirroring industry requirements. The course has been designed with an Industry Advisory Committee of professional experts at KOMO, KBTC, Channel One, and the Student Television Network.

CONTENT: Students receive training in Workplace Competency areas of Human Relations, Communications, Computation, and Safety Practices. Students receive training in Industry Specific Competency Skills in the areas of Broadcast Production, Camera Operation, Lighting, Technical Directing, Special Effects Generation, and Computer Editing. Both of these competency categories provide development of Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Team Building, Interpersonal and Written Communication Skills.

COURSE LENGTH: The typical length of this course is One Semester (18 Weeks/156 hours including 2 hours each week outside of the classroom)

REQUIREMENTS: To enroll in this class students must have filled out and returned a formal application which includes two Letters of Recommendation and have one or more of the following:

  • The recommendation of a Junior High/Middle School Video Production Instructor in writing.
  • Completed a Beginning Photography class at Bethel High School or a Basic Video Production course at their previous school with an A or B Final Grade.
  • Completed a Basic Journalism class with a C or better Final Grade.
  • Provide a 5 minute videotaped Video Production Resume.

Students must also have achieved a minimum 9th grade math and reading level to successfully complete course assignments and projects.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT CREDIT: Students who will enter Bates Technical College's Broadcast Production Technologies program may register for dual high school/college credit in:

  • CTECH 101 Introduction to Broadcasting & Media Careers (2 credits)
  • PTECH 103 Production Process Theory (3 credits)
